Replica Study Research Project

Replica Study: An International Studies of Tobacco Harm Reduction

Replica is the first international interlaboratory study that has been established since 2019 to bring together a multi-center research network of academic and affiliated laboratories worldwide by conducting inter-laboratory studies comparing the most recent generation of alternative products to traditional tobacco cigarettes together with replicating results from published in vitro research on the cytotoxicity and inflammation induced by cigarette smoke and aerosol from electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). Replica study also mainly focuses on validating high-profile studies of the original work under supervision.

Replica study addresses the need for standardized research by providing reliable scientific data on ENDS for the following purposes:

  • Replicate high-profile in vitro studies testing ENDS.
  • Assess the validity of the original work put under scrutiny.
  • Inform the scientific academia and the public of the progress.
  • Contribute to improving local and international THR policies.

Recently, eight international laboratories have been connected to Replica as mentioned below:

  • CoEHAR, University of Catania, Italy.
  • Laboratorium Sentral, Universitas Padjadjaran, Indonesia.
  • NoSmoke Team, Patras Science Park, Greece.
  • Center for Molecular Medicine and Stem Cell Research, University of Kragujevac, Serbia.
  • Temple University, USA.
  • College of Medicine & Health Sciences, Sultan Qaboos University, Oman.
  • Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology, Kazan Federal University, Russian Federation.
  • Faculté de Médecine, Université Mohammed 6 des Sciences de la Santé, Marocco.

As one of the partners, PHARCI conducted an international webinar regarding “Harm Reduction Efforts in Smoking” on Friday, 7th April 2023. The meeting focused on the reduction of tobacco harm by exploring the detailed facts of smoking.

Moreover, Universitas Padjadjaran in collaboration with Replica study also held a workshop on smoking machines from June 22nd to 23rd at Jatinangor, Sumedang, Indonesia. This Indonesian partner of the Replica 2.0 project aimed to create a network of experts and researchers with high-profile technical skills.
